Gratitude

One of Danny's teachers is retiring this year - not his main teacher, Mr. Lin, but the other teacher in his class - Mrs. Smith.  Mr. Lin is the main teacher in the morning class with Mrs. Smith as backup; Mrs. Smith teaches the afternoon kids while Mr. Lin is the second teacher to them.

Today, on the last day of school, both the AM and PM classes were finishing up the year - all 48 of them were sitting in the room five minutes before the end of the year.  Mr. Lin said to all the kids, "Does anyone have anything they are thankful for - for Mrs. Smith?"

Our Danny raised his hand right up, and was called upon first:

"Thank you, Mrs. Smith, for helping me in Center (when they sat around a table and focused on reading and writing)."

Honestly, you could have told me I won a million dollars.  That's my kid - filled with gratitude, and not shy about it.  Nothing could have made me prouder.

So now we have a First Grader...!

Superhero Party

There is so much insane cuteness in this post, just sit down and get a tissue.

OK so after three years of being the kid who got dragged along to his big brother's parties, playdates, non-stop, "will I ever have a friend of my own?"... Matty got invited to his first birthday party - OF HIS FRIEND.

Kenji was having a superhero birthday party, and costumes were encouraged.  Of course, Matty decided to go as Spiderman, replete with mask and Spiderman shoes.

We got there early, helped set up, and before we knew it, guess who else showed up...

THE REAL SPIDERMAN!

He ran the kids through their paces, kicking and punching...

And then musical chairs with webs hidden in the sand.  Obviously.

So here's the thing - Matty won.

Danny, who had been playing on the playground in his Super Raccoon Costume, watched the whole thing.

"He did it!" he says to Dad.

"He did!"  Dad responds.

There's Farley, with the super cape and his big green eyes.  Next to him is me, with the orange eyes.  But I have no legs, well, they are invisible, so I can kick bad guys and nobody sees it.

At the bottom is Matty, with his big mouth - so big, it can eat a skyscraper.

That blue guy is the SUPER EVIL FLEA who is trying to destroy the world.  You can see all of his evil zombie fleas at the top, waiting for him to unleash them, and they will destroy the world.

Mom:  Are those green things the zombie fleas already attacking Farley?

Danny:  No, mom - those are hearts!

Mom:  Is the title "Dan and Cat?"

Danny:  No, that's who wrote it.   We wrote it together.

So here comes SUPERCAT! His long tongue slithers around like a snake and catches the Evil Super Flea!

Mom:  What's that orange thing?

Danny:  His cape!

Here is Evil Super Flea behind bars.  And at the bottom is the Kitty Police.

And in jail, Evil Super Flea tells us how he started on his evil path - you can see he developed a remote control that turned all the fleas into evil zombie fleas.

Mom:  So wouldn't this be the first page of the comic book?  Like the beginning?

Danny:  No!  It is the story he tells, it happens at the end, like in Scooby Doo, when the bad guy explains how he became bad.

Mom:  So it's his Origin Story.

Danny:  What?
